Calibrating Inclusive Sporting Encounters

Update on work package 1 by Susen Lange

As part of work package 1, which aims to elucidate determinants and outcomes of sport participation by people living in diverse marginalised situations, a scoping review was conducted. Via reviewing the literature of the last five years (2016-2020), this scoping review aims to add to the understanding of why people in marginalised situations do or do not participate in sport. The scoping review is currently under review.

Furthermore, survey material provided by Life Goals was analysed. The Life Goals foundation offers adapted programmes in various Dutch communities helping people in diverse marginalised situations to re-join society through sport (Stichting Life Goals, n.d.). Based on the provided quantitative survey data, the individual and social outcomes of sport participation for people in marginalised situations who attend an adapted sport programme were investigated. The results were presented and published at the DSO 2020 (Lange et al., 2020). Adding to this, interviews with Life Goals coaches are currently conducted to get further insights on the outcomes identified in the survey.

The gained insights are furthermore fed into a survey investigating sport participation among a wider low socioeconomic segment across the Netherlands. Currently, the survey questionnaire is being developed.
